Detroit used to be one of the most well known cities in America. It was known as the one of the most opportunitistic cities based on all of the automotive plants and assembly line jobs. People would come from all over to get paid for doing one simple job over and over. But, then riot struck and because of segregation Detroit started to become more of a war zone than a utopia. This lead to many run down buildings and despite all the money being put into the city, the population started to take a fall and the remaining people were being taxed like crazy. Before anyone could stop this tragedy, Detroit became finacially broke.
One of the biggest reasons for the financial meltdown in detroit is due to the corruption in government. Most of the corruption can be traced back to Coleman Young. Kwame Kilpatrick was the king of corruption in detroit. He used hundreds of millions of dollars for personal expenditures. This is money that could have been used to bring back a once great American city. The loss of money due to Kwame led to less services which in turn forced people to leave which created a much smaller tax base which lead to even more less services. It was only a matter of time before the city went bankrupt.
ReplyDeleteDetroit despite all the down fall and crime in the city still to this day is one of the most well known cities; More or less know for infamy but still well known. The city has so much history and it doesn't have to stop because the city was abandoned. I say if peopel actually took an interest in Detroit again and focused on bringing it back up then it can be one of the most prosperous cities in Michigan again.
